Hey, peeps! I am here with another blog post. This is actually the first article I wrote for Navyaata Magazine; A popular fashion magazine in Nepal.
Let's read the post now.
Fashion
is a style followed by mass of people. Fashion Designers introduce a style, and
the consumers make it fashion. There is a blame that evolution in Fashion is
the root cause of rape in our Nepalese society. The blame is baseless.
We are
humans. We love changes and we can’t stay in a staple time. Most of us value
girls and boys equal. We don’t have so many social evils like in the past where
untouchability, gender discrimination etc were still prevailing. We live in a
time where we are post modernism. We accept everyone’s belief and still live
together in harmony.
Fashion
is evolutionary in nature. It is not at all revolutionary. Fashion changes time
to time because we like to experiment and simply, we want more. Fashion is for
people. Everyone has their own unique style that captivates at least one person
when we walk down the streets. We will notice at least something about a person
like,” Wow! Look at her shoes/ her dress/her accessories/her hair/ the way she
is walking/ the way she is flaunting her style.”
After
the World war, there were huge losses to the war-participating countries. They
suffered the loss of their loved ones. Many men died in the war leaving their
wives and children alone. To survive, the post-war generation women had to do
the works which men did before. To perform tasks and heavy works the old
fashion corseted dresses were not at all suitable which led to the decrease in
the length of the dresses. There was lack of manpower for the production of
fabric. There were many people to be dressed but less amount of fabric was at
avail. The less production of fabric and the heavy work performed by women to
survive led to a major change in Fashion. In 1920’s Coco Chanel first introduced
loose women’s jersey that allowed a relaxed style for women ignoring the
corseted look of the time.
Our
Nepalese culture has been affected a lot by the western culture due to
globalization. We have learnt to dress and personify western people which resulted
changes in Nepalese Fashion. Girls wear short skirts, hot pants, sleeveless,
strapless and backless clothing. She can dress however she wants but it does
not mean that those dresses are worn to provoke anyone. There are occasions
when we dress up to impress and dress up to express. Some people wear clothes
which are entirely black, just to show that they love black or majorly
sadistic. Some people color their hair blue; just to stand out in the crowd.
Girls do wear garments that show their skin a little or more. The clothes are certainly not the reason for
such hideous crime. The reasons for such crimes are due to ill-minded people
who perform such activities and the society people who blame the victim for
being victimized by herself as if, she had invited the rapist to rape her.
In
present generation, we consider women and men equal but in our country even
though we seem to be treated equal there’s always that bit of male domination.
Girls can dress however they want and no one has any such right to rape them.
Wearing short dresses and showing skin doesn’t make anybody a characterless
individual. Everyone has the right to express themselves through their clothing
and that is what fashion and style is about. You simply cannot judge entirely
someone based on their clothing and if you even judge, you sure might miss out
several things what that person has to offer for the society and for the
country.
